healing garden

The transformation of ASTT's backyard was marked by the   celebratory opening of the Healing Garden in May 2010. The event followed months of planning, design, excavation, grading, and hardscaping, along with a series of "planting days" undertaken by clients, staff, friends, and neighbors.

Intended as an outdoor extension of the therapeutic "safe space" that ASTTprovides for clients, the Healing Garden was made possible by a grant from the TKF Foundation, which supports the creation of green "sacred places" throughout the Baltimore/D.C. area.

The garden features native perennials, flowering plants, and shrubs that provide year-round greenery. Aromatic herbs abound- basil, parsley, rosemary, thyme,

lavender, sage, and mint. For many clients, these plants

evoke memories of traditional dishes, favorite recipes, and botanical remedies. Conversations spark around the various uses of the different leaves and blossoms, or the names for plants in clients' native languages. Garden visitors regularly gather herbs and harvest the tomatoes and peppers that flourish in oversized planters.

With a trickling water source, seating stones, a patio table, and a roomy wooden bench outfitted with a journal (a hallmark of TKF-funded projects), the garden offers many spots for quiet reflection. At the same time, the setting fosters conversation, interaction, and the shared enjoyment of nature.

"If you are stressed, if you see green things, it relieves

your stress."

"I really feel peace and safety here."

                      - ASTT clients

The garden's development was participatory in nature, with clients' ideas guiding the process.  ASTT staff, friends, and neighbors contributed their suggestions, and TKF's staff provided guidance and encouragement.

Ashley Kidner of International Landscaping and Design brought his expertise and insights to the project and integrated clients' visions into an organic, unified whole. Architect Shoriah Talaat provided consultation on modifications to the old garage, which now features a patio, glass door, and skylight. Area nurseries provided generous donations and discounts on many of the plants.

A devoted corps of volunteers, including clients, staff, friends and neighbors, has helped the garden flourish. If you are interested in taking part in garden care, please contact Rosalie Whedbee at (410) 464-9006 or by e-mail at volunteer_coordinator@astt.org.
