There are many ways in which you can help raise awareness about the practice of torture and the needs of survivors. These range from telling your friends about ASTT’s work to contacting your congressperson about pending items of legislation that will affect the welfare of survivors and asylum seekers.

Encourage others to visit our website and find out about ASTT’s important work. If you can tell one person about the needs of torture survivors and the role of ASTT, you will be playing an important part in raising awareness about a vital human rights concern. Some ideas include the following:

  • Host a movie night and invite an ASTT staff person to lead a discussion afterwards. ASTT has an archive of movies we would be happy to make available.
  • Consider hosting a speaker or public event on human rights or torture treatment and prevention. Interested parties can also invite an ASTT staff member to speak at your community organization, church, mosque, synagogue, school or other institution.
  • Take up a collection on behalf of ASTT at your place of worship. All donations will go directly to the emergency client fund.
  • Send a letter to the editor or contact members of Congress on important legislation relating to U.S. government policies on torture and on the treatment of asylum seekers, refugees, and immigrants here in our country. Sample letters can be found on the National Religious Campaign Against Torture web site and from the Friends Committe on National Legislation (PDF).
  • Host a photo exhibit of our clients ‘Healing Images.” Click here to read more about healing images.
